Accused Drag Racer Says He “Definitely Wasn’t Drag Racing”

The man accused of drag racing and seriously injuring another Memphis driver says he didn’t do it. 25-year-old Cordero Ragland appeared in Shelby County court Monday morning.

Ragland is charged with drag racing, aggravated assault, and other violations stemming from a wreck on Poplar Avenue along Overton Park February 10th.

Police said Ragland was racing another driver westbound when his and another car crashed into a driver turning left on eastbound Poplar Avenue.

In a Local 24 exclusive Monday, Ragland, who is out on bond, told us he wasn’t drag racing.

“I definitely wasn’t drag racing,” said Ragland as he was leaving court. When asked if he had any comment for the victim and her family, Ragland responded, “I just hope she gets better and pulls through and gets better.”

Friends of the victim said the woman, in her 40’s, remains in a coma.

A friend of the victim had this to say after court; “It’s not like this is the first time he’s done anything, and it just doesn’t make sense to me that he clearly has a track record and he has no regard for other people.”

Ragland has a lengthy criminal history, including his role in a mob attack at a BP gas station in midtown Memphis in 2015. He’s due in court again on March 13th.
