Attempted robbery ends in shots fired outside Cracker Barrel

MEMPHIS, Tenn.(localmemphis.com)- Onlookers at a Cracker Barrel in northeastMemphis did not expect to see a police scene Saturday morning.

Witness AliciaHolton said she watched in disbelief as a man in a jeep repeatedly rammed aJetta Volkswagen on Shelby Oaks Drive.

“TheJetta crossed lanes over, and a black truck tried to run them over and theycollided,” said Holton. “The people got out the car, he gotup on the curb and tried to run them over with his vehicle.”

She says threepeople were inside and jumped out. The driver in the Jeep, still pursued themas tried to get away.

“The people got out of the car. I saw two young ladies,and an African-American male run over to the hotel and the guy in the blackJeep tried to follow them and run them over.”

Memphis policesay at some point shots were fired, but no one was struck by a bullet.

Holton says theman who was driving the Jeep was placed in handcuffs and spoke withinvestigators.

She believed thecrash was initially road rage.

“It’s been a lot of road rage. You don’t expect to seethat eating breakfast in the morning with your family.”

However,Memphis police confirm the incident stemmed from an attempted robbery at RedRoof Inn next door.  

Local24 spoke with a woman who works nearby who says she’s glad no one was seriouslyinjured by bullets flying.

“Whatcould be going on so bad between you and that person that you wanted to runover them?” questioned Betty Lamarr. “You could have killedthem.”

Memphis policesay three people were detained. So far, no one has been charged.
