Dead dog left in Memphis backyard for several days

ABC24 received a tip that a dog had been lying dead and decaying for several days and that nobody was doing anything to remedy this tragic situation.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Tuesday, neighbors in a Raleigh neighborhood said a dead dog in the backyard of a home has been decaying for days and no one, including the homeowner, is doing anything about it.

ABC24 received a tip that a dog had been lying dead and bloated for several days and that nobody was doing anything to remedy this tragic situation.

On the 4000 block of McWeeny is where you’ll find the normal looking home with a disgusting surprise lying just beyond the back door.

And now, after we investigated, the City of Memphis has seemingly taken action.

Neighbors said they last saw the brown and white dog over the weekend but have not seen it since.

We knocked on the front door of the home where the dog is, but no one answered. We then called the City of Memphis and told investigators the neighbors' concerns.

The city said Memphis Animal Services does not retrieve dead dogs from local properties unless there was animal cruelty involved. However, we discovered through our investigation that City of Memphis Solid Waste does.

Neighbors said this is good news, adding that they hope this dog can finally rest in peace.

The City of Memphis said that while Solid Waste can remove the animal, the homeowner must sign a waiver for action to be taken.
