Fire at Hampton Inn in Hernando caused by 'discarded smoking material'

The fire happened Monday at the Hampton Inn Hernando in the 2600 block of McIngvale Road.

HERNANDO, Miss — Investigators said "discarded smoking material" is to blame for a fire at a Hernando, Mississippi, hotel Monday, Feb. 26, 2024.

Hernando firefighters responded to the scene about 9:20 a.m. at the Hampton Inn Hernando in the 2600 block of McIngvale Road. The fire department said when they got there, flames and heavy smoke were reported on the ground floor, and ran up a decorative column to the roof. 

It took several hours for the firefighters to bring the flames under control. Firefighters said everyone got out safely.

Investigators said they found smoking material had been discarded and ignited that decorative column outside the hotel. 

A video of the fire was posted on the Hernando Happening's Facebook page.
