Four inmates injured after disturbance at 201 Poplar, Shelby County Sheriff's Office says

The four inmates who were injured were transported to Regional One in non-critical condition before being treated and returned to 201 Poplar, according to the SCSO.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Four inmates were injured during an incident in which objects were set on fire and a door was knocked off it's tracks at 201 Poplar on Friday night, according to the Shelby County Sheriff's Office (SCSO).

"Several disturbances" took place in a single housing unit at 201 Poplar on Friday night, May 3, according to SCSO. The first two involved setting objects on fire and throwing them, the SCSO said.

Correctional deputies immediately put out these fires and de-escalated the disturbances, according to the SCSO.

It was later learned that one or more cell doors were knocked off of their tracks, according to the SCSO. This compromised the ability to secure many other doors in the housing unit, according to the SCSO.

The main door in the housing unit was not compromised, and the disturbance was kept isolated to that particular unit, according to the SCSO. The housing unit's main door was tied closed from the inside using bed sheets in an attempt to keep deputies from entering, according to the SCSO.

Deputy sheriffs responded to the jail to help the deputies with opening the main door to the housing unit and securing all inmates with the use of a chemical agent, according to the SCSO.

This allowed the incident "to be concluded peacefully," according to the SCSO.

The four inmates who were injured were transported to Regional One in non-critical condition before being treated and returned to 201 Poplar, according to the SCSO.

No SCSO staff were injured during the incident, according to the SCSO.

All of the inmates from the housing unit were relocated to other units within 201 Poplar, according to the SCSO.
