ROCK THE BLOCK EVENT

More than 80 volunteers braved cold temperatures Saturday to clean up and celebrate South Memphis’ Castalia Heights neighborhood.

The efforts were part of Habitat for Humanity and Republic Services’ Rock the Block event.

Volunteers started with a beautification project around 55 homes by picking up trash and planting bushes. The day wrapped up with a block party where volunteers and neighbors enjoyed food and games.

“Well, at Habitat, you know our vision is a world where everyone has a decent place to live, and for us that doesn’t just mean new home construction. It includes shoring up the existing community and helping improve the neighborhood for folks that have been here for years,” said Jessica Hord with Habitat for Humanity of Greater Memphis.

Habitat for Humanity has plans to start building houses in Castalia Heights next year.
