The Memphis Grizzlies are helping kids shoot for excellence. Thursday, the team hosted the Read to Achieve Championship Celebration.
Around 4,000 elementary students were rewarded for reading at least six books in six weeks. 53 local schools and more than 12,000 students took part in the reading challenge.
Star player Mike Conley hopes this encourages kids to keep up the momentum.
“As athletes, as mentors, as role models, we want to try to allow the kids to understand the importance of it, and all the knowledge you can learn and attain just from opening up a book and taking some time to read,” said Conley.
Reaching an estimated 50 million children a year, Read to Achieve is the most extensive educational outreach initiative in the history of professional sports.
