The Memphis Zoo is seeking new bamboo patches to feed giant pandas “Ya Ya” and “Le Le.”
The bears are offered upwards of 200 pounds of bamboo a day, and eat roughly 60-80 pounds of that. Bamboo makes up 98% of a giant panda’s diet.
“Mid-Southerners have been generous with their bamboo supply in the past, and we’re hoping for the same turnout,” said Matt Thompson, Director of Animal Programs. “We appreciate everyone’s support.”
The Zoo is seeking all species of bamboo, on plots of a quarter-acre or larger. For more information on donating bamboo to the Memphis Zoo, please visit memphiszoo.org/bamboo or call (901) 333.6513.
