MS Tax-Free Holiday For Guns

Gun store owners in Mississippi are gearing up to unload lots of weapons during tax-free weekend which runs Friday through Sunday. Local 24’s Tish Clark spent the day at the Gun Exchange in Olive Branch to find out how to go about buying a gun and how much money shoppers can save.

“It’s our best weekend of the year. It’s like Christmas,” says The Gun Exchange owner Jeff Duncan.

Get locked and loaded during Mississippi’s tax-free holiday this weekend. You won’t pay sales tax on guns and gear Friday through Sunday.

At the Gun Exchange in Olive Branch, you’ll find hand guns, long guns, even a 1918 military-grade pistol priced at nearly $3300, except on Friday and Saturday.

“It’s $3000 out the door,” says manager Richard Yoder. “Unfortunately I only got this one here so first come first served.”

Duncan says buying a gun is a quick, painless process. Just bring a state issued ID, like your driver’s license.

“To be able to buy a long gun you have to be 18 years old. To be able to buy a hand gun it’s 21. Of course, everyone who comes in has to pass the state-mandated background check,” says Duncan.

On a $500 purchase, you’ll save $35 in sales tax. That’s a tank of gas for most people.

Duncan wants to remind everyone that safety is more important than saving sales tax.

“Be responsible with it and keep it in a safe place where children cannot get to it at all,” says Duncan.
