MLGW Sends Help To Florida But Waits On Irma

It’s easy to answer the question what do the folks in Florida need, following Hurricane Irma.

Many need just about everything and help they need help. “They did ask us for crews,” says Gale Jones Carson of Memphis Light, Gas, and Water.  “They wanted more than two crews but we could only spare two crews. Should the storm get really bad in Memphis, we might have to call those crews back.”

Several days ago, the remnants of another Hurricane named Harvey came rolling through Memphis, with heavy rain, winds, and even tornados.

More than 40-thousand people lost power.

Irma, or what’s left of her, is expected to meander into Memphis Tuesday.

Memphis Public Works Director Robert Knecht is ready.

“You have to pay attention,” he says.  “You have to be prepared and you have to be proactive like we do every time. We proactively prepare. We do what we can so that we’re ready and then when things happen, We’re staffed with people. we’re ready.”

People run from emergencies.

Emergency responders run into the danger.

If somebody can help, help is sent and Florida obviously needs help.

According to Shelby County Emergency Preparedness Director Dale Lane,  “We do have search and rescue teams that are staged. We have had through the state health department they have taken some ambulances from our area to be part of an ambulance strike team.”

Lane is now watching which way Irma is heading using several sources.

“They’re pretty consistent,” he says. “We’re not going to have the impact like we did with Harvey here in the mid south.”
