MPD Looking For Burglars After Two Homes Broken Into In Colo

Memphis Police are searching for burglars who pried open security doors of two homes in the Colonial Acres neighborhood.

The criminals went so far as to breaking into security doors made of steel, and that’s making people who live in the area worried. We believe they may have used a crowbar.

Joe Sankey is one of the victims Local 24 spoke with Wednesday. “He says the thieves broke in after 7:00 a.m. Tuesday morning.”

“As best I could tell they forced the metal door open with a crowbar or something similar and then used quite a bit of force to kick in the interior door,” Sankey explained.

Sankey says the suspects got away with some items and they did it fast.

“This is somebody who knew what they were doing,” Sankey said.

The culprits got through at least four security locks on Sankey’s door. More than 10 hours later, burglars tried to break into another home in the neighborhood on Hummingbird Lane, but they were unsuccessful.

“I think there is still a lot of people just becoming aware of the fact that it is not one isolated event,” Sankey said.

Local 24 also spoke with Kevin Whaley who has spent decades installing security doors. He says people need to invest in their safety.

“If the victim would have had a strike plate on their door that would have made the door a better deterrent,” said Kevin Whaley who has been in the security door industry for 20 years. “Security doors, window guards, lighting, alarm systems and having relationships with the other people in their neighborhood.”

Sankey is taking the necessary steps to make sure this doesn’t happen again.

“At the end of the day nobody is more responsible for your safety than you so plan accordingly,” Sankey said.

Memphis have increased patrols in the area. Police are still looking for suspects. Anyone with information, call Memphis Police.
