New Historic Marker Unveiled For Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest

Wednesday was a day filled with history in Memphis. At Calvary Episcopal Church in downtown Memphis, a new historical marker was unveiled for Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest.

Forrest had a home that was at the corner of what is now Adams and Second.

An old marker said that Forrest became a wealthy man because of a variety of businesses. The new marker includes that Forrest made his money as a man who bought and sold slaves.

“This is the work of many hands and hearts over the last three months,” said Rhodes college history professor Timothy Huebner.

The historical marker also says this area of Adams Street was once the hub for slave trading in Memphis prior to the Civil War.
