Pearl Eva Walker and Jerri Green reflect on Memphis City Council election victories

In the Hickory Hill area, Pearl Walker won by just 14 votes. In district two, which includes Cordova and East Memphis, Jerri Green won by a small margin as well.

For the first time, a majority of the Memphis City Council will be made up of women.

This comes after three women swept their runoffs Thursday — including two first-timers.

In the Hickory Hill area of district three, Pearl Walker won by just 14 votes against James Kirkwood.

In district two, which includes Cordova and East Memphis, Jerri Green won by a fairly narrow margin as well — just 56 votes, defeating challenger Scott McCormick.

Both of them said went on record to say they are real life examples that "every vote counts."

"At first I was like, 'Ok, I know someone is going to pinch me because this is a dream right? but, no, yeah, I won," Walker said. "I'm grateful. I'm excited. I would say in one word — grateful."

Green said she knew her race would be close.

"This district has never been held by a progressive, and so to flip it is one of the hardest things you can do in politics," Green said. "That meant we had to put in real work."

All newly elected officials in Memphis will be sworn in on New Years Day, including mayor-elect Paul Young.

Green said she's prioritizing crime reduction and MLGW infrastructure while walker says her top priorities will be environmental justice and business growth.
