Memphians trotted with police officers Saturday in honor of a fallen Memphis Police Sergeant.
It was the 2nd Annual Turkey Trot with cops, in honor of Sgt. Verdell Smith.
Smith was killed last summer when a car driving in the wrong direction on Beale Street hit him.
Participants say doing events like this keeps Smith’s spirit alive.
“He was a mountain of an officer, he was a sergeant, we all love Verdell. He was a great officer with the MPD. Verdell had a vision, he was a big community service sergeant. He participated in community events, he was a mentor to the boys and girls club. He was a great servant.” says Col. Gregory Sanders of the Memphis Police Department
All proceeds from the event will go to families in need.
