Shelby County Commissioners want more accountability from courts on new bail system

The county commission approved $2 million last year to run the bail hearing room, which was intended to speed up bail hearings.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Some Shelby County Commissioners and Tennessee state representatives are demanding the Shelby County courts give them more data and progress reports on the new bail hearing system.

The county commission approved $2 million last year to run the bail hearing room, which was intended to speed up bail hearings. But Commissioner Mick Wright said the courts haven't provided six-month progress reports on bail and defendant trends.

So now the county commission now wants quarterly reports. They also want the bail hearing room used more.

"It's over $2 million that we've put into, to make this bail hearing room work. And so not only has the court not seemingly met the agreement on the data sharing, but from what I understand, they've not always been using the room itself,” said Wright.

The resolution passed a Shelby County Commission Committee Wednesday and it's expected to be approved Monday.
