MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Did you get a fraud alert email from the Shelby County Register of Deeds? You may be one of many.

ABC24 is seeking solutions and found that the Shelby County Register reported early Thursday that the office was having issues with the alert system.

People around Memphis and Shelby County reported receiving the emails claiming there is a fraud alert through the register of deeds. ABC24 staff also received the emails, which were received April 25, 2024, with the alert dated April 23.

The emails labeled ‘Shelby Fraud Alerts”’ came from the email address reply@bislandrecords.com. The ‘Instrument number’ said 24033151.

The Shelby County Register of Deeds posted a message on its website early Thursday, saying if you receive one of these alerts, you can ignore it.

As of 4:15 p.m., the Register's Office said the vendor had resolved the issue and the system is working again properly.

"The system was not compromised, and no personal data was lost. The cause of the issue was a technical reboot of the system," said a statement from the register's office.

The Shelby County Register of Deeds offers the fraud alert service, which can provide an extra layer of protection for homeowners to make sure their properties are safe from bad actors, such as those who might try to place a quitclaim deed on a property.

In March 2024, the office said roughly 19,000 people were enrolled of 250,000 property owners in the county.
