Southaven Officer Injured & Squad Cars Damaged While Trying To Arrest Shoplifting Suspect

A Southaven police officer was injured early Thursday morning while answering a suspicious person call at the Walmart off Goodman Road in Southaven.

A Southaven police officer was injured early Thursday morning while answering a suspicious person call at the Walmart off Goodman Road in Southaven.

Investigators say the officer got to the scene, and saw Oliver Houston Peyton pushing a cart out the door with a Hewlett Packard box in it. The alarm went off, and investigators say when the officer went to check, Peyton took off running.

They say Peyton struck the officer with his car door, knocking him to the ground. They say he then hit two other Southaven Police cars and two DeSoto County squad cars before he was taken into custody.

The officer did not require medical treatment.

46-year-old Peyton, who is from Memphis, is charged with shoplifting, aggravated assault on an officer, simple assault on an officer, felony fleeing, and other traffic charges. He in jail without bond.
