What would you do with $940 million? Mid-South lottery players take a chance for huge jackpot

Players have until 9:45 p.m. CT, Jan. 6, to purchase a ticket for this latest big Mega Millions drawing.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The latest lottery haul up for grabs is a $940 million Mega Millions jackpot, with a drawing set for Friday night. The prize ranks as the sixth largest in U.S. history. If someone wins, it would be the fourth largest jackpot win in the multi-state game’s history.

“It’s incredible,” said Tony Wilson. “A lot of money.”

“I usually only play the Mega Millions or Powerball after it gets up to $2 or 300 million,” said Michael Pixler.

“People out in other states be winning. It’s about time for us to win something. so, maybe I will get lucky. Maybe somebody from Memphis will get lucky. Maybe somebody from Tennessee will get lucky,” said Wilson.

In fact, there have been two Mega Millions jackpot winning tickets sold in Tennessee in the past — one in Pegram worth $20 million from the drawing held April 15, 2022, and the other in Bellevue worth $61 million from the drawing held Jan. 3, 2014.

“If I hit, I’m going to buy me five cows and one bull,” said Tony Hines.

“I could do a lot of good with that much money. I mean, help all my family. even the extended family. and still be filthy rich,” said Pixler. “If I win, there will be no more working. At least not for anybody else. I’ll just be having fun. No more jobs. No more business. Just working out, having fun.”

Players have until 9:45 p.m. CT Jan. 6, 2023, to purchase a ticket for this latest big drawing.

“I had a lady to get 33 tickets of the Mega Millions today,” clerk Charmaine Brown told ABC24. “It’s been a rush… It’s going to get crazy in here after everybody gets off work and come in, almost time for the balls. Everybody trying to get tickets.”

This latest big jackpot comes less than two months after a player in California won a record $2.04 billion Powerball jackpot. Players also won lottery prizes topping $1 billion earlier in 2022 and in 2021.
