WEST MEMPHIS, Ark. (localmemphis.com) – West Memphis Schools will be getting millions of dollars from a property tax increase, thanks to voters Tuesday. It’s the first time that’s happened since 1953.

The state promised the district $22 million in federal funds, but only if it would chip-in the same for two new state-of-the-art junior high schools.

The latest numbers on the so-called millage rate proposal have nearly 1,700 people voting for it and just over 300 against.

The rate would go up nearly 7%, which means someone who owns a $100 thousand house would pay about $6 more a month in property taxes.
