MEMPHIS, Tenn. — While you could travel just a few hours to see the total solar eclipse from the Mid-South, one local space enthusiast will be traveling all the way to another country to see the eclipse, here’s why.
Ric Honey has been interested in Space for decades, he says his passion dates back to the early 90s when Comet Levy Shoemaker crashed into Jupiter and was visible from Earth. This interest in the night sky has led Ric to help share some of the most spectacular views with others, and that will be the case on April 8th when he helps capture the event for the Exploratorium Museum in San Francisco.
“I volunteered and I provide the telescopes and mounts and set them all up… I got to go with them to Ely Nevada for the Annular Eclipse back in October. Well, now we are going down to Torreón Mexico for the total eclipse.”
Setting up the equipment and watching the eclipse will not be a first for Ric, who was able to view the last Total eclipse in the US.
“I never understood how awe-inspiring that was until 2017 when we had the first of what is being called the Great American Eclipses.”
Ric says he is looking forward to viewing the eclipse down in Mexico but also hopes others here in the Mid-South are able to experience the once-in-a-lifetime event.
“It will be one of those things you remember for the rest of your life.”
