Opinion | ZIP codes tell the COVID-19 vaccination tale | Richard Ransom

The Shelby County Health Department tracks COVID-19 vaccination data various ways, including by ZIP code.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — In Thursday’s Ransom Note: what your zip code says about being vaccinated for COVID-19.

According to the map from the Shelby County Health Department, the more red your zip code is the more likely you've had your shots. For example, parts of downtown Memphis, east Memphis and into Germantown and Collierville --the areas in dark red-- have between 44% to 62% of people vaccinated. However, in north Memphis, Westwood, south Memphis, Whitehaven, and Hickory Hill --the areas in light yellow-- have less than 25% of people vaccinated. That's why the city is doubling up efforts to go into those communities and take shots to the neighborhoods that need them most.

There are some other startling numbers that may surprise you. Throughout the pandemic, 56% of those with COVID-19 have been Black. In the past two weeks, it's jumped to 77%. From the beginning, those under the age of 35 accounted for 43% of cases, but in the last two weeks, it's jumped to 56%. Perhaps most shocking of all: children had accounted for just 12% of cases, but now that's almost doubled to 22%.
