Freedom Preparatory Academy shuts down middle and high school football program

“This decision was not made lightly, and we understand the concerns and disappointment that it has raised among our families,” said the statement from the school.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Freedom Preparatory Academy (FPA) is shutting down its football program, the school confirmed to ABC24.

A school spokesperson said in a statement that FPA decided to restructure its athletics program, eliminating the football program for both middle and high school students.

“This decision was not made lightly, and we understand the concerns and disappointment that it has raised among our families,” said the statement. “Our primary goal remains to support all of our student-athletes and provide diverse opportunities for them to excel both academically and athletically.”

Freedom Prep said it was awarded a reimbursable grant from the National Football League Foundation in 2023, and those funds were going to go to new bleachers, lights, and a scoreboard. But the school has not completed the upgrades, so no reimbursable funds have been received from the NFL Foundation.

The statement continued, “Freedom Prep remains dedicated to fostering the spirit of teamwork and camaraderie that football has brought to our community. We are exploring alternative athletic and extracurricular activities to ensure that our students continue to have enriching experiences. We appreciate the ongoing support and understanding of our community as we navigate these changes and work towards the best outcomes for our students.”
