MUS Lacrosse: On Field Dominance, Academic Excellence Define Championship Pursuit

Head Coach Joe Cummings Leads Team to Victory Amidst Academic Achievements; Prioritizing Excellence On and Off the Field

The Memphis University School Lacrosse program is hoping to add another piece of hardware to the Owl's already crowded trophy case.

In order to progress in the state playoffs second-year head coach Joe Cummings decided the best way to make the team better is to play some of the best schools in the nation to start the season.

"We’ve played one of the toughest schedules in Tennessee this year," said Cummings, who leads the lacrosse program at Memphis University School (MUS).

The Maryland native strategically scheduled three games at the start of the season against schools from the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA), widely regarded as the toughest division in the nation. "We know what it takes to compete at that level, and now it's about executing and making the necessary adjustments," Cummings emphasized.

The adage "You learn in March so you can lift the trophy in May" became the mantra for the team. Despite a modest start of 3 wins and 3 losses, the Owls rallied to finish the season with an impressive 9-1 record.

Their postseason campaign commenced with a resounding victory over Father Ryan, limiting their opponents to just 3 goals in the second half en route to a dominant 21-11 win.

Beyond the lacrosse field, the Owls excel academically, maintaining top grades in the classroom. All-American attackman Hays Prather played a pivotal role in securing a first-round victory, netting six consecutive goals. Prather leads the state in assists and ranks second in total points with 97. Despite interest from several Division I schools, Prather prioritizes his education over collegiate lacrosse, stating, "I want to prioritize attending a good college over playing lacrosse."

Joining Prather is junior attackman Tucker Davis, the team's second-leading scorer, boasting a GPA above 4.7. Like Prather, Davis is courted by multiple Division I programs, yet he remains undecided about his future in lacrosse at the collegiate level.

Coach Cummings commended his players' dedication to excellence, both on and off the field. "It's impressive to see these guys excel in every aspect of their lives—academics, athletics, community service, and personal relationships," he remarked. "They epitomize the values of our team."

For the Owls, success transcends the lacrosse field as they continue to shine academically while dominating their opponents.

MUS will host Briarcrest, who are coming off of an impressive overtime win over Baylor, this Friday in the second round of the state playoffs.
