Smith, Griggs collect AAC postseason awards

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Two Memphis Tigers collected postseason awards for their play during the regular season. Maddie Griggs was named All-AAC Second Team and Alasia Smith was named to the AAC's All-Newcomer team.

Griggs is no stranger to postseason hardware. It's her third postseason award. In her fifth year, she averaged 16.7 points, 3.2 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game in league play while scoring 49 three-pointers. 

Griggs was an iron women for the Tigers. She averaged 39.4 minutes per game, the most in the AAC. She was also top-10 in league steals, , three-point field goals made per game, total three-point field goals made, points per game and total field goals made. Griggs became Memphis' all-time leader in three-pointers made in the 2022-2023 season.

Smith transferred to Memphis from Gardner-Webb this season, a holdover from first year coach Alex Simmons' Bulldogs team. As a member of the AAC she averaged a double-double, 10.7 points and 10.2 rebounds per game. She was top 5 in league rebounds, steals and blocks. 

Memphis went 9-9 in AAC play. They locked in the No. 8 seed in the conference tournament and will play No. 9 seed East Carolina in the second round after a bye. The game is in Forth Worth, Texas in Dickies Arena. Tip off is set for noon.
