Here's where to get the best view of April's total solar eclipse in the Memphis area

While the eclipse will cover about 98% of the sun in Memphis, the most stunning view of the total eclipse is just an hour away.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — One of the biggest astrological events of the decade is happening in just a few weeks - the total solar eclipse of April 8th that will darken skies across North America.

A solar eclipse occurs at the exact moment when the moon passes between the sun and Earth, blocking the sun's light for several minutes. The short time when the moon completely blocks the sun is known as the period of totality.

The eclipse will begin around 12:30pm that Monday afternoon with the maximum eclipse just before 2pm.

In Memphis, the sun will be about 98% covered, which will be enough to dim skies and provide an incredible view. It's more than the 96% eclipse that Memphis experienced back in 2017.

However, the view in the path of totality will be even more stunning. That's where 100% of the sun is covered by the moon for several minutes, allowing a remarkable view of the solar corona around the sun.

For many, it'll be worth the drive to experience the total eclipse. The total eclipse path will stretch from Texas to Maine, passing through parts Arkansas and Missouri.
