Mid-Southerners stock up on essentials to keep warm ahead of approaching winter storm

People are making sure they have enough supplies for the next several days; as several inches of snow are forecast along with more frigid temperatures

GERMANTOWN, Tenn. — The Mid-South is bracing for some exceptionally cold weather. And, many people, like Dan Mungle, are making sure they are extra prepared as extremely cold temperatures are upon us.

"We're very familiar with how winter weather can upset your life," Mungle said.

People were out and about Saturday trying to find firewood and other essentials to keep their homes warm.

Cars lined up in the parking lot of the Agricenter, off Germantown Parkway, to buy firewood. Mungle said it was difficult to find a place that wasn't sold out.

"There’s a couple here, but the lines are fairly long," Mungle said.

People, like Porchtia Foster, have other essentials ready in case the power goes out.

"I have safety blankets and camping candles and lights and stuff like that," Foster said.

Foster said it's important to be over-prepared for any kind of situation you might face in a winter storm like this.

"Just make sure you have everything you need in advance and making sure you have plenty of water and different things of that nature and plenty of candles and plenty of firewood," Foster said.

The Memphis Fire Department wants to remind everyone, if you have your fireplace lit to make sure a screen is covering it and do not leave any heating unit unattended. Lt. Wayne Cook, the public information officer for MFD, added if you use a space heater, make sure it has at least three feet of clearance from anything and turn it off before going to bed.

"Make sure all of your heating units have been inspected, make sure that if you are using fireplaces or wood-burning stoves that you have checked them and are safe for use," Cook said.
