MEMPHIS, Tenn. — When we roll around to the weekend, it seems like we have been preparing for wet weather to move in. This has been part of a trend leading to rain every weekend in the year of 2024 so far.

Around 57 percent of our rainfall this year has fallen on either Friday, Saturday or Sunday. This has led to over 5 inches of rain going into the middle of February.

This rainfall has led to a 7-week streak of seeing at least a trace of precipitation for our weekends in the Mid-South.

A big reason for this wet pattern is El Nino, which creates an active subtropical jet stream which sets the stage for a more active pattern in the southern United States. This increase in systems leads to more wet weather, which has been the case so far this season.

As we look towards the spring months, El Nino looks to be less influential in our weather. According to the latest outlooks from the experts at the Climate Prediction Center, the spring season (March-May) will likely once again feature wetter weather than normal.

With increased temperatures into the 60s and 70s, this could lead to eventual severe weather concerns. Before we get to that time of the year, we have some relatively quiet weather we are expecting in the week ahead.
