Three men arrested after drug search in Orange Mound after SCSO said man sped car toward deputies before being shot

Detectives said they determined that the house on Barron Avenue was used as the base of operations for a number of subjects involved in a drug trafficking operation.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Three men arrested in connection to the situation in Orange Mound where the Shelby County Sheriff's Office said a man drove toward deputies before being shot and killed are now out of jail on bond.

Quentavious Johnson faces charges of possession of a firearm / dangerous felony and possession of marijuana with intent to sell. He is out of jail on $25,000 bond.

Willie Hampton faces various drug charges. He is out of jail on $40,000.

Christian Mull faces drug and theft charges. He is out of jail on $15,000 bond.

SCSO said Tuesday, April 30, that five deputies have been placed on administrative leave with pay following the incident, which is standard practice in these type of cases. The investigation is still ongoing.

Court documents from the the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) reveal that a search warrant was issued for an intended target at the house on Barron Avenue where the incident took place. SCSO SWAT and narcotics officials saw four people running toward the rear of the residence to avoid law enforcement, according to an affidavit. 

Detectives said they made contact with Quentavious Johnson and Willie Hampton in the parking lot, and they were detained without incident, according to the affidavit. 

Christian Mull was found once officers made their way through the front door and was detained without incident, according to the affidavit. Still, detectives have yet to make contact with the four people the saw running away from the residence, according to the affidavit. 

A bottle of promethazine, 4.5 pounds of marijuana, four digital scales, three oxycodone pills, nine white xanax pills, various firearms and almost $7,000 were found in the residence, according to the affidavit. 

A 27-year-old victim who is a woman was also found in the residence, according to the affidavit. More guns, marijuana and money were found in the backyard, according to the affidavit, as well as a part of the fence that had likely been pushed down when the four people ran from the location.

One of the guns that was found had a gold switch attached, according to the affidavit.

More guns and marijuana and $460 were found in a Mustang that Johnson was standing next to, according to the affidavit. Paperwork and identification for Johnson was found inside the Mustang, according to the affidavit. 

Mull, Johnso,n and Hampton were then transported to 5295 East Shelby Drive for processing, according to the affidavit. Mull was told his Miranda Rights and Johnson told authorities the Mustang didn't belong to him, according to the affidavit.

Through the investigation, detectives determined that the house on Barron Avenue was used as the base of operations for a number of subjects involved in a drug trafficking operation, according to the affidavit.

Detectives said they have seen a number of men conducting hand-to-hand drug transactions with those who pull into the parking lot, according to the affidavit.

The SCSO said Friday evening that deputies were involved in the shooting in Orange Mound, and the TBI identified the man who died during it on Saturday.

The SCSO said the shooting happened in the 3100 block of Barron Ave. near Poppen Rd. around 3:30 p.m. April 26, 2024.

“I heard a big boom twice. I thought it was a transformer or an accident," Orange Mound resident Georgia Davis said.

Sheriff Floyd Bonner said a team of SWAT deputies were serving a "high-risk" narcotics search warrant in the area when a man who was waiting in a car began to speed toward them. Bonner said the deputies then fired into the car, fatally wounding the driver. No one else was in the car, according to Bonner.

The sheriff’s office said Friday that the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has been called to investigate the incident. 

On Saturday, April 27, agents with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said they have identified the deceased man involved as 30-year-old James Q. Hampton.

The SCSO said they found narcotics and are still searching for more. Deputies said they also found weapons in the search as well as a Glock switch.

No officers were injured, and an undetermined number of them were involved in the shooting, according to the SCSO. They are being put on paid leave, Bonner said.

Residents were asked to avoid the area and use Ruby Lane with Poppen and Woodbury as a detour.
