1 dead, 2 seriously injured after car crash on Mt. Moriah and I-240 following traffic stop

The Shelby County Sheriff's Office said a deputy was conducting a traffic stop when the suspect made a U-turn and sped off.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Shelby County Sheriff's Office (SCSO) said an accident on Mt. Moriah and I-240 following a traffic stop left one dead and two injured on Tuesday.

At around 4:15 p.m., the SCSO said a deputy initiated a traffic stop at southbound Mt. Moriah near American Way. As the deputy got out of his car and approached the suspect's car, the suspect made a U-turn and sped off northbound on Mt. Moriah.

The SCSO said the deputy turned his car around and found a two-vehicle crash at Mt. Moriah and the I-240 overpass, where the suspect overturned.

The suspect was pronounced dead on the scene, and the driver and passenger of the other vehicle involved were taken in critical condition to Regional One by Memphis Fire, the SCSO said.

Mt. Moriah was closed at the I-240 overpass. The county asked drivers to use 385 or Perkins as an alternate to access Mt. Moriah north and south bound.
