MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Chris Englert has been announced as the interim president of Christian Brothers University.

CBU's board of trustees announced Englert's appointment Thursday, May 2, 2024.

“I cannot think of a more respected leader to guide our students at this pivotal time in the University’s history,” Emily Greer, President of the CBU Board of Trustees, said in a release. “Brother Chris knows the organization and represents the values that each of us holds dear, and we feel honored that he has accepted our offer to serve in this new capacity.”

Englert came to CBU in 1974 from Cincinnati, graduating in 1977 with a degree in humanities.

He also holds a Master of Arts in Religious Studies from La Salle University in Philadelphia and a Master of Arts in Educational Administration from the University of Missouri at Kansas City. He returned to Memphis in 1988 to take the position of Vice Principal at Christian Brothers High School; after one year, he was promoted to principal and served in that leadership role until 2018.

Englert said in a release that while the opportunity was unexpected, he sees it as a chance to reinforce the Lasallian Legacy, which he feels shaped his personal and professional life.

“It is an honor to be asked to serve this great institution that not only provided an education and career path but helped to grow my faith and value system,” Englert said. “This is a full-circle moment, and I look forward to reminding the community why this institution has had a significant impact on students, just like me, for more than 150 years.”

The university has faced adversity in the last year with budget cuts aimed at addressing deficits.
