Two detained after 1-year-old boy found in SUV in North Memphis dies at LeBonheur

Just after 2:30 p.m. Thursday, officers responded to the 900 block of Thomas Street about a child in a vehicle.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis police said two people have been detained after a 1-year-old boy was left in an SUV in North Memphis and died.

Just after 2:30 p.m. Thursday, officers responded after a concerned woman called in about a child left in an SUV near the Education is the Key Children's Center in the 900 block of Thomas Street.

Police said the boy was taken to LeBonheur Children’s Hospital, where he died.

LeBonheur Children's Hospital confirms the child's passing is Memphis' first child hot car death this year. None were reported last year, according to the hospital's spokesperson.

Meanwhile, investigators have not said what officially caused the child’s death.

ABC24 started digging into the background of the daycare where the child was found.

According to the Department of Human Services, the business can care for up to 111 children, between the ages of 6 weeks to 13 years.

What raised a strong question was a zero rating for the daycare.

Tennessee childcare providers with full-year programs in Tennessee must have at least six unannounced visits.

State records show no violations were found at this center dating back to 2016.

ABC24 learned the star-quality program rates child care center on a scale from 1 to 3.

Those ratings state 0 stars mean the provider has a license in good standing and may be related to disciplinary actions placed on the agency.

Now under Tennessee's report card and rated license system, every licensed child care provider must receive an annual evaluation as part of its licensing process. It’s required after one year.

The investigation is ongoing.
