Viewing the night sky in Memphis after the solar eclipse

After April 8th, one local group will continue to get locals interested in the night sky.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — While the Eclipse is on the way, local astronomers say there is so much more to view in our night sky.

"Most of the time its out in the ocean or over a remote part of land so to be an hour and a half away drive, potentially within the path of totality is such a rare thing.”

The eclipse this year has many excited but maybe not as much as the president of the Memphis Astronomical Society Jeremy Veldman

He will be heading out with other members of the group to Arkansas to view the solar eclipse.

Using tools as basic as a colander all the way up to solar eclipse binoculars and a telescope he hopes to get the best view.

But, he says the group hopes to allow others to see exciting things in our sky even after April 8th.

“The Memphis Astronomical Society has been around for 70 years, basically a bunch of astronomy nerds who that geek out on the night sky.”

The group has members but also hosts events for the public during the year including star parties where attendees can view the night sky, the next which occurs on May 4th in Wynne, Arkansas.

Jeremey says this event can be a great way for anybody including kids to get interested in our night sky and hopes to see more people looking at the stars after the upcoming eclipse.

“If you can get your kids to look at look through a telescope at the craters of the Moon, or the rings of Saturn, the moons of Jupiter, its typically an awe inspiring experience, it inspires them to take it further.”
