Opinion | Are the ACTs even relevant anymore? | Richard Ransom

Local 24 News Anchor Richard Ransom discusses in his Ransom Note about the local school's and their ACT scores.

MEMPHIS, Tenn — In tonight’s Ransom Note: some perspective on those ACT scores.

We told you Germantown and Houston High were tops in the state, again, and they deserve congratulations for being number one six years running.

So, what about Shelby County’s other school districts?

  • Collierville was next with a 24.6
  • Arlington with a 23
  • Bartlett with a 21.6
  • Millington with an 18.8
  • And the Shelby County school district with a 17.5

Most seniors take their ACTs before March so it’s doubtful the pandemic played a huge role in this year’s scores.

Still, it was good so many universities and colleges didn’t use ACTs this year.

And there are questions whether ACTs and SATs have outlived their purpose.

If parents can afford it, there’s now a huge cottage industry for tutoring high school kids and helping them raise their scores, sometimes by a lot.

These exams are supposed to be the great leveler, testing kids on what they know no matter their background.

But the big unkept secret is that’s really no longer true.
