Opinion | Memphis is in another top ten list, but not one we want to be on | Richard Ransom

ABC24 Anchor Richard Ransom discusses in his Ransom Note about WalletHub's new study of the nation's most sinful cities.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — In tonight’s Ransom Note: the most sinful cities.

WalletHub out with the list for 2021 and this year, Memphis finishes number ten out of 180 US cities ranked.

How we got there might merit a look in the mirror because dozens of metrics were used to divide cities up by sin categories.

One of our worst was “anger and hatred.” Things like violent crime, sex crimes and hate crimes are factors and Memphis finished tenth.

But "jealousy" was Memphis’ worst category. Second in the nation based on our theft, identity theft and fraud rates per capita.

Memphis was 39th on “excesses and vices” taking into account obesity rates, smoking and drug overdoses.

"Greed" was our best category. Despite casinos per capita, our charitable contributions kept us at 135th overall.

When it comes to "lust," Memphis ranked 31st factoring things such as strip joints per capita and how often we search for porn on Google.

"Vanity" wasn’t bad. 122nd overall considering things such as number of tanning salons and plastic surgeons per capita.

And "laziness" was our third worst category. We’re 24th in the nation thanks to things like too few adults exercising, how much time we spend watching tv and high school dropouts.

Now not surprisingly “THE” sin city, Las Vegas was number one. They are  followed by St. Louis, Houston, Los Angeles and Denver.

But bottom line for us is our violent crime rate is why Memphis finds itself on another top ten list it’d rather not be on.
