Things could get windy: What you need to do to prepare for the next round of severe weather

The big concern is gusty winds, especially after the debris and power outages from the last ice storm.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — With severe weather on its way, it's always important to be prepared for the worst, while hoping for the best.

It seems this winter the Mid-South can’t catch a break. Forecasters are expecting heavy rain and maybe even thunderstorms or tornadoes Thursday. But the big concern is gusty winds, especially after the debris and power outages from the last ice storm.

Tennessee’s severe weather awareness week starts next week, but here are some reminders for now.

  • Have an emergency plan in place
  • Don’t go near any high water
  • Go indoors if it's thundering outside

Always keep those preparedness kits handy with the following on-hand:

  • A gallon of water a day per-person and per-pet
  • Flashlight
  • Extra batteries
  • Portable charger

MLGW warns that with the strong winds could come more power outages, especially if there are still hanging limbs from the ice storm. Gusty wind could knock down branches into power lines.

Remember to call MLGW at 901-528-4465 to report emergencies like downed power lines and gas leaks. Customers can use their MLGW My Account or call 901-544-6500 to report outages.

The National Weather Service said it's also important to be careful driving. Use extra caution if driving an SUV or big rig, especially along an east-west oriented roadway.

As we know here in the Mid-South, always stay prepared and think safety first.
