MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Bond has been set at $3,000,000 for a 17-year-old charged after a shooting left a man dead Wednesday, April 24, 2024, in Parkway Village.

Montrell Kinds is charged with first-degree murder, first-degree murder in perpetration of aggravated robbery, especially aggravated robbery and evading arrest in a motor vehicle. Bond was set at $3,000,000 on April 30 and the judge ordered a mental evaluation.

The Memphis Police Department responded to the shooting around 11 p.m. in the 4800 block of Cloister Avenue, where officers found a man. He was pronounced dead.

According to an affidavit, a family member had found him in bed with gunshot wounds to his head and chest. Investigators said the victim appeared to be sleeping when he was shot, and family told them that his car was missing.

Using a GPS tracker, investigators found the car in the Capleville area on E. Shelby Drive, the affidavit said. The suspect drove away, beginning a police chase. The suspect stopped on Oakshire and ran until he entered an open window on Baywind. Officers managed to get into the home and arrest the suspect, later identified as Kinds.

According to the affidavit, Kinds told investigators he called the victim because he needed somewhere to stay. Inside the victim's bedroom, Kinds said they fought and he found the victim's gun under a pillow. Kinds said they struggled over the gun and it went off, striking the victim's head. Kinds then took the car and a shotgun before leaving the scene.
