Off-duty MPD officer arrested, charged for DUI after crash

Joshua Bowles has been relieved of duty pending the outcome of the investigation, the police department said.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Memphis police officer is facing charges after driving intoxicated and crashing into another car while off duty early Sunday morning.

The Memphis Police Department responded to a driving under the influence (DUI) call May 26, 2024, just after 4:30 a.m. at a parking garage on South 2nd Street, where a security guard had said a black Dodge Charger crashed into the right side of her car.

On the third floor, officers saw the Charger still running, stopped in a driving lane, with the driver’s door open and a man sleeping at the wheel.

Police woke up the driver, who was identified as Memphis police officer Joshua Bowles. Officers said Bowles was confused and failed a sobriety test. Bowles told officers he was not injured.

Bowles was taken into custody and charged with a DUI, public intoxication and failure to exercise due care. As standard practice, Bowles has been relieved of duty pending the outcome of the investigation, the police department said.

According to court documents, Bowles was released on his own recognizance.
