What you need to know about the increase of COVID cases in Shelby County

The Shelby County Health Department said there has been nearly a 250% increase in cases the first week of the new year compared to October.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Shelby County Health Department said COVID cases are on the rise, and residents should be prepared to test, isolate, and seek treatment if necessary.

The Health Department said between Dec. 31, 2023, and Jan. 6, 2024, 129 cases were reported, compared to 37 for the week of Oct. 13 through 19, 2023. They said that represents a nearly 250% increase.

Since December 2021, the health department has distributed more than 102,000 free home test kits.

Order kits by completing a short online form at COVIDTests.gov or calling 1-800-232-0233 (TTY 1-888-720-7489). Free COVID-19 testing is also provided by local pharmacies through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Bridge Access Program. This program provides free laboratory testing to uninsured individuals who are symptomatic or have been exposed to COVID-19. Find a site by entering a zip code at https://testinglocator.cdc.gov/

If You Test Positive:

The SCHD said if you test positive for COVID-19, you should stay home for at least five days and isolate from others. This is when you are likely most infectious. Wear a high-quality mask if you must be around others.

If you tested positive but do not have symptoms, you can end isolation after day five. If symptoms are improving and you remain fever-free for 24 hours, you can end isolation after day five. If your symptoms are not improving, continue to isolate for 10 days.

Be sure to monitor symptoms closely and contact your doctor if you develop shortness of breath or difficulty breathing. COVID-19 treatment is most effective if started within five days of developing symptoms.

If you are uninsured or covered by Medicare, TennCare, or Veteran’s Administration (VA) insurance, you may qualify for COVID-19 treatment at no cost. Find participating providers at https://aspr.hhs.gov/TestToTreat/Pages/default.aspx, or call 1-800-232-0233 (TTY 1-888-720-7489).
