Opinion | 901 Day celebrates the positives of living in Memphis | Richard Ransom

Over the years, boosters of all things Memphis have done a great job of using our 901 area code as a way to celebrate the city and its Shelby County suburbs.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — In Tuesday’s Ransom Note: Choosing 901. Over the years, boosters of all things Memphis have done a great job of using our area code as a way to celebrate the city and its Shelby County suburbs. So, while Wednesday may be plain old September 1 for the rest of the world, around here it's come to also be known as “901 Day,” the unofficial holiday for highlighting what's great about living in the 901.

Roller skating on the river crossing, dining out, enjoying the Memphis Botanic Garden, or having a beverage from one of our growing number of rooftop patios are just some of the options being suggested.

While COVID canceled the block party that was planned, at the very least why not spend your money at a local business and show support for a city that certainly has its challenges but deserves at least one day for celebrating what's good about living here.

At Local 24 News, we're doing our part. Send us a selfie from your favorite Memphis spot by texting us a photo, along with your name and location, to 901-321-7520. We could show your selfie on one of our newscasts.
