Opinion | Ladies and gentlemen, we have ourselves a new plate | Richard Ransom

Richard Ransom discusses the new design that has been chosen for Tennessee's license plate.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — In tonight's Ransom Note: we have a winner!

Tennessee's license plate hasn't changed since 2006 and Governor Lee figured with it being the state's 225th anniversary and all, it was time.

So the state had a contest asking folks to chose between four different designs. The one with the blue background, white text and the three star emblem got most of the 300-thousand votes.

You can decide if you want the words "In God We Trust" around the emblem since that is optional.

Critics say the plate is too bland and that it should feature music or nature that Tennessee is known for. But the state law requires only three things of any new design:

  • It must have the word "Tennessee"
  • It must have the words "Volunteer State"
  • And it must have the state's vacation website, "tn.vacation.com"

Law enforcement reportedly wanted a design that is easy to read. And our rapid growth required seven characters instead of the current six leaving less room for creativity.

If you don't like it, too bad. It'll be 2029 before the state chooses a new design.
