'We want to be the family that we are today': Germantown students speak out on future of their schools

Germantown and Memphis-Shelby County Schools have until the end of the year to come up with a plan to turn over the 3Gs to Germantown.

GERMANTOWN, Tenn. — Students who attend the 3Gs spoke up over the future of their schools.

Despite being named Germantown High School, Germantown Middle School and Germantown Elementary School, a vast majority of students who go to those schools don't live in Germantown.

They have remained under the control of Memphis-Shelby County Schools, but new state law says the schools have to be sold back to Germantown, leaving the students to wonder what happens to them.

"It's time for us to stand up, it's time for us to take our place and let our voices be heard," said ninth-grade student Calvin Nicholson. "Because if we just let the adults talk for us, then it'll be like they want this. We want you guys to know that we want this. We want the 'G'. We want to be the family that we are today."
