MEMPHIS, Tenn. — One was killed and two others were injured after a massive fire at an independent senior community home in East Memphis late Thursday night, Dec. 29.
The Memphis Fire Department (MFD) responded to the 2-alarm fire at the Feels Like Home Senior Lifestyle Residences at the 3300 block of Kirby Road in East Memphis.
The cause of the fire is tied to a downstairs unit on the south side of the building, according to MFD. At least two fire stations responded to the scene.
The two residents who were injured in the fire are now in stable condition, said a representative from Feels Like Home Senior Lifestyle Residences.
Feels Like Home Senior Lifestyle Residences confirmed the death and injuries of their residents.
"Feels Like Home Senior Lifestyle Residences suffered a tragic loss Thursday night. As many of you reported, one of our residents died in the fire. The two hospitalized seniors have been stepped-down to stable condition.
We are heartbroken at the loss of life because every senior is precious to us; but we are so very grateful that our remaining seniors are safe and secure at this time.
We want to thank the residents, staff, firefighters, police and anyone else who assisted in the evacuation and relocation of our seniors or simply sent a prayer. Please continue to keep us in your prayers as we mourn and navigate through this tragedy."
A MATA bus driver at the scene told ABC24 that he was brought in to help evacuate residents at the facility after another bus broke down.
One firefighter was treated on the scene for fatigue and was not taken to the hospital, according to MFD. Total property loss was estimated at $1,000,000 by MFD and the contents at $500,000.
