Opinion | MSCS: A school district in crisis | Richard Ransom

Richard Ransom gives his thoughts on MSCS Superintendent Dr. Joris Ray being placed on administrative leave.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — School district in crisis. That's the state of Memphis-Shelby County Schools right now.

Thank goodness for the seven school board members who voted to put Dr. Joris Ray on administrative leave who recognized that fact. They had no other choice.

The allegations against Dr. Ray are too serious. The implications are too big.

You can't have an independent investigator requesting important and sensitive information from the same office as the man who's under investigation.

What's truly tragic is that the same week we learned at least 75% of the district's 3rd through 8th graders can't perform at their grade level in English or Math, and just three weeks before the new school year starts, now the district must deal with a scandal surrounding its superintendent with no idea how long the investigation of him will take or how much it will cost.
